During pregnancy, an ultrasound examination is performed on the expectant mother in the hope of learning the gender of the baby. The gender of the baby in the womb is genetically determined from the first day of pregnancy. However, we need to wait longer to see this gender of the baby with an ultrasound examination. With the ultrasound examination, the gender of the baby begins to show itself at the earliest from the 4th month, between the 13th weeks of pregnancy. However, this may not always be possible. The gender of the baby becomes clear mostly between the 14th and 15th weeks. By the 20th week of pregnancy, the gender can be fully assessed. There is a small possibility of error when determining the gender of the baby. During the ultrasound examination to be performed 1 month later, a gender difference may be observed. This situation generally occurs in the form of the penis of the male baby not being observed. In short, if the gender of the baby is determined to be male, there is not much margin of error. Because the penis of the baby has been seen during the examination. Of course, in some cases, if the cord is seen between the legs, the female baby may look like a boy. However, this mistake is much more common in babies that are identified as girls. The reason for this mistake is that the penis cannot be seen, which creates the misconception that the baby is a girl.
In addition to ultrasound examination, the sex of the baby can also be determined with certainty through chromosomal studies performed during pregnancy with methods such as amnocentesis (amniotic fluid taken from the mother’s womb) or chorionic villus biopsy, cordocentesis. During these examinations, the chromosomal structure is found in a girl baby (XX) and in a boy baby (XY). With this method, both the sex of the baby and whether a chromosomal disease has been passed on to the baby are determined.
Apart from these, there are also home gender determination tests. Although these tests have an accuracy rate of around 80%, they are not recommended due to some drawbacks. At the same time, these tests are banned in some countries. Turkey is not among the banned countries.
