How many times can a Caesarean section be performed?

One of the most frequently expressed opinions for expectant mothers who give birth by cesarean is that it is possible to have a maximum of 3 cesarean births. However, this is not correct information sharing. Of course, more than 3 cesarean births can be done. However, the expectant mother must know and accept these risks. In short, there are opinions that more than 3 cesarean births are dangerous. In cesarean births, the intra-abdominal adhesions of expectant mothers increase day by day and risky, challenging situations occur.

It is not recommended for a mother to have a cesarean section more than 2 or 3 times. However, as I have just stated, this does not mean that a cesarean section cannot be done more than 3 times. In more than 3 cesarean sections, the mother and the baby may face a risk factor. For this reason, cesarean section is not recommended for expectant mothers unless there is no other option.

What are the risks of multiple caesarean sections?

The probability of certain risks and complications increases with the number of cesarean sections performed. These risks are as follows;

• There is a possibility of injury to the bladder, bowel and ureter
• The mother’s need for intensive care increases.
• As the number of C-section births increases, the likelihood of adhesions occurring within the uterus also increases. The placenta may become positioned in the birth canal and the birth canal may become blocked.
• As the number of cesarean births increases, the number of incisions in the uterus also increases. As with other surgeries, there is a possibility of some risks in cesarean section.

In which cases is it not appropriate to have a vaginal birth after a cesarean section?

• History of previous cesarean section with a vertical (classic) incision
• History of uterine rupture during labor
• Deep incisions have been made in previous surgical procedures performed on the uterus for various reasons.
• During pregnancy, there are factors that will make normal birth difficult (large baby, breech, side presentation, etc.)
• Continuation of the previous reason for birth by caesarean section (narrow roof, etc.)
