Why do varicose veins occur during pregnancy and how can they be prevented?

The veins that carry clean blood from the heart to the organs and tissues are called arteries. The veins that carry dirty blood back to the heart are called veins. When veins become enlarged and twisted and become visible on the skin, it is called varicose veins. Many factors are effective in its formation. Genetic characteristics, gender, past diseases, age, profession, etc.

While veins carry blood to the heart, the valve mechanisms inside them prevent the blood from flowing backwards. There is no need for such a structure in arteries, because the heart pumps blood forward violently. The veins in the legs push blood upwards with a similar effect as the muscles contract. The valves inside the veins ensure that the blood is carried in one direction. The inadequacy of these valve mechanisms is effective in the formation of varicose veins.

The area where varicose veins are most often seen during pregnancy is the legs and the back of the knees. When they appear in the anus, it is called “hemorrhoids”. Varicose veins of various degrees are seen in 15-20% of pregnant women. The body’s water retention during pregnancy increases the amount of fluid in the circulation. The amount of fluid in the veins increases, the valves become inadequate and the blood pools backwards. In addition, the growing uterus presses on the main veins in the abdomen, increasing the pressure in the veins. Varicose veins are usually painless, sometimes they may cause mild pain when touched.

Although it is not possible to prevent varicose veins, there are things that can be done to prevent their progression. Avoiding standing for long periods of time, not bending the feet while sitting or keeping them elevated, using compression stockings called varicose vein socks, and exercising the leg muscles by walking can prevent blood pooling. Preparations produced for the treatment of varicose veins can be used after the third month of pregnancy when the doctor deems it appropriate. Varicose vein stockings must be used during birth or cesarean section.
