Risks of IVF Treatment

Like other treatments, IVF treatment has risks. However, the side effects of the medications used for IVF treatment methods are very low.

Side effects of medications: In IVF applications, some stimulant medications are used to increase the number of eggs. These medications may have some side effects;

  • Bruising, swelling, and pain may occur in the areas where the medications are injected.

  • The patient's mood may change and abdominal pain, nausea, and vomiting may occur.

  • As a result of excessive stimulation of the eggs (may occur in some patients), weight gain, nausea, vomiting and bloating may occur. These are usually spontaneous discomforts.

Risks of Egg Collection

Egg collection procedure: The patient is put to sleep using anesthesia and the eggs are collected with a needle. Some risk factors may occur;

  • There may be discomfort during or after the procedure,

  • Although not very common, mild or severe pelvic infection can occur. However, it can be prevented with antibiotic treatment.

  • There may be some bleeding in the ovaries. In some cases, surgery may be required. However, it is not a very frightening condition.

Side effects of embryo transfer: After the embryos are transferred to the uterus, there may be mild pain and bleeding. This is not a serious condition. There is no need for medication in the treatment. Rare infections are treated with antibiotics.

Multiple pregnancy risk: This is one of the most dangerous risks in IVF applications. The aim is to get pregnant with more than one baby while having only one baby. The health of both the mother and the babies may be at risk. Other risks that may occur in multiple pregnancies ;

  • Premature birth,

  • Maternal bleeding,

  • High blood pressure,

  • Gastrointestinal diabetes

In order to minimise such risks, the number of embryos to be transferred is very important.

Risk of birth defects: Children born through IVF treatment have the same risk as other normally born children. They do not carry an additional risk factor.

Risk of miscarriage: The risk of miscarriage in IVF treatment is the same as in normal pregnancies. There is no additional risk. However, the risk rate is higher in older people. The risk of miscarriage is around 50% in older ages.

IVF Success Rates

The success rate in IVF is primarily related to the age of the mother. Calculating the success of IVF treatment should be done with live births. In addition to the age of the woman, there are other factors that affect success. The quality of the mother's ovaries and the sperm quality of the father are also very important factors.

In couples applying for IVF, the younger the mother candidate is, the higher the chance of success. The quality of the eggs is also very important for success. Other factors affecting the chance of success in IVF are;

  • Duration of marriage of families

  • Previously suffered diseases

  • Whether the mother has had a miscarriage before

  • Whether the expectant mother was pregnant before starting treatment

  • Age of the expectant mother and egg quality

  • The sperm quality and count of the prospective father is also important.
