Period Delaying Medicines


1) What are the medications that delay menstruation?

The most commonly preferred drugs for delaying menstrual periods are drugs that affect the inner lining of the uterus, referred to as progesterone. These drugs, which help delay menstrual periods, do not affect ovulation in any way. They only affect the lining of the uterus and help prevent bleeding from starting.


2) What are the side effects of period delaying drugs?

Period delay pills do not cause a permanent hormonal problem. They do not have any negative effects on having children. They also do not cause weight gain. Since only the menstrual day changes, the menstrual cycle is also re-regulated according to the new bleeding day. During the use of period delay pills, women may experience side effects such as bloating, constipation, tension, headache, and irritability. However, none of these effects are permanent, they are temporary.


3) When will I get my period after finishing the period delay pill?

Side effects that occur after the use of period delaying medication ends. The medication prevents the menstrual cycle from occurring as long as it is used, and menstrual bleeding begins again within a day or two after the use is completed.


4) How to use period delaying medications and when should you start using them?

In order to delay your period, you should use the medication at least 4 days before your period. If you are less than 4 days away from your period and use the medication, it may not delay your period. However, it has been observed that it does. Sometimes, spotting may occur while using the medication, so don't worry. You should use the delay pill regularly and remember to take it during the day.


5) Can birth control pills be used to delay menstruation?

In people who use birth control pills, it is easier to balance the menstrual cycle and the day of the period. When the pack is finished, the second pack should be started without any break and the medication should be continued for the day that the period is desired to be delayed.


6) Will there be any side effects if the menstrual cycle is delayed for more than 10 days?

If the menstrual cycle is delayed for more than 10 days, swelling occurs in the breasts. At the same time, a feeling of edema may occur in the body. Prolongation of the menstrual period or increased bleeding are among the common side effects. Apart from all these, there are no very obvious side effects.


7) How should such drugs be used?

The medication is started to be used 2 days before the expected menstrual period. There are also different forms of these medications. Some of the medications are taken 2 times a day, some 3 times a day. The duration of use should not exceed 10 days. 8) What kind of changes occur in the body after taking the medicine?

There is no significant change. A slight fullness in the breasts (like the fullness felt before menstruation) and a feeling of tension in the body may be a little more pronounced under the effect of these medications. However, this is not a rule that all women will experience this condition.

10) If I have sexual intercourse after using the medicine, can I get pregnant?

Period delaying drugs only have a period delaying effect. They do not prevent pregnancy unless used with birth control pills.


11) How many times can period delaying medications be used in 1 year?

There is no limit in the sources regarding the duration. However, doctors do not recommend using these drugs too much. For example, it is considered normal to use them twice a year, or up to 3 times if necessary. It is important to use them as little as possible in order not to disrupt the natural cycle.


12 ) How does the medication affect the next menstrual cycle?

With the first bleeding after using the medication, the body creates a new cycle for itself. And it continues in that way. In short, the first day you had your period after using the medication, the next month you will have your period again on the same day.


13) What are the issues that need to be taken into consideration?

Some of our patients need to have the inside of the uterus measured with ultrasound before using the medication. The structure of the inside of the uterus is examined and the estrogen or progesterone content is evaluated. These types of menstrual delaying medications mostly contain only progestin. However, every progestin also has a slight estrogenic activity. Doctors prefer to use those with higher estrogenic activity. However, the thickness and structure of the tissue called the endometrium, which is the inside of the woman's uterus, guides the medication to be used.
