Nutrition During Pregnancy

Foods that should not be eaten during pregnancy

There are certain foods and food types that can cause problems during pregnancy, even if consumed excessively or in small amounts. First of all, if we consider what should not be consumed, the first thing that should come to mind should be raw or uncooked meat. It causes the microorganism called Toxoplasma to enter our body and causes Congenital Toxoplasmosis in the fetus in the womb. In this case, miscarriages or permanent birth anomalies are seen. For this reason, especially in the first three months of pregnancy, care should be taken to eat meat thoroughly cooked, and raw meat, raw roots, and meat products from unreliable restaurants should not be consumed.

Cheese made from unpasteurized milk, raw or undercooked eggs can also cause food poisoning during pregnancy. Unwashed vegetables or greens used in salads are a good way for microorganisms to enter the body. Therefore, pregnant women should take extra care to wash them.

Consumption of seafood is the best source for omega 3 intake during pregnancy. However, products such as mussels, oysters, and shrimps that are not cooked properly can cause poisoning. It is obvious that sushi consumption will also pose a risk. The meat of sharks, swordfish, and bottom fish contains high levels of heavy metals and is not recommended for consumption.

Smoking and alcohol also have very serious negative effects on the fetus when used during pregnancy. Miscarriages, low birth weight, premature birth, hypertension during pregnancy, fetal alcohol syndrome and other very serious conditions are the results of smoking and alcohol.

In addition, it is necessary to pay attention to foods that can be consumed normally during pregnancy but have negative consequences when consumed excessively. Excessive fatty foods, fried foods, carbonated drinks, very salty and very spicy foods, chips and chip-like snacks are the foods that pregnant women should avoid. If sweets are not consumed at a taste level, they cause excessive weight gain in the pregnant woman and the fetus. Candy, chocolate, marmalade and liqueurs also cause unnecessary excessive calorie intake. Since the negative effects of excessive tea and coffee consumption on the fetus have been determined, the limit of one or two cups of tea and one cup of coffee per day should not be exceeded.

How much weight should I gain during pregnancy?

Weight gain during pregnancy varies from person to person. Factors such as weight and eating habits before pregnancy, genetic characteristics, presence of gestational diabetes, and number of previous pregnancies are variables that determine weight gain.

The importance of nutrition during pregnancy is obvious. However, taking in more calories than necessary makes the pregnant woman bulky and causes the baby to be exposed to excess insulin. Large babies, called macrosomic babies in medical terms, are exposed to many complications during birth and may also encounter metabolic problems after birth. For this reason, it is important for the pregnant woman to eat only as much as she needs without taking in too many calories.

Diets that are rich in protein and supported by sufficient carbohydrates and fats are recommended and advised food types during pregnancy. Vegetables and fruits should definitely be added to the diet to obtain the necessary vitamins and minerals. Consumption of animal foods should be supported and dairy products should be a priority for calcium support.

As a result of all these, the monthly weight to be gained should be kept around one to one and a half kilograms. For a person with a normal body mass index, a total gain of 11-15 kilograms at the end of pregnancy can be considered ideal. It should be kept in mind that a significant portion of the weight gained after birth will disappear on its own, and cosmetic concerns should not be entertained.
