How to Calculate Pregnancy Weeks?

1) How to calculate pregnancy weeks?

There are many different methods used to calculate the pregnancy week. However, many times, mothers and fathers cannot calculate the pregnancy week or calculate it incorrectly. The reason for this is that the pregnancy week is calculated not according to the day of fertilization, but according to the first day of the last menstrual period.

The time when pregnancy, i.e. fertilization, occurs is approximately 15 days after the last menstrual period. However, when calculating the pregnancy week, the menstrual period before this date is taken into account, not this date.

Unless there is any pregnancy-related condition, gynecologists calculate the pregnancy week with a very simple formula.

2) How to calculate pregnancy weeks using the Negele method?

The day when the expectant mother will give birth to her baby is calculated using a system called the “negele method.” In this method, the first day of the last menstrual period is taken into account and 7 days are added to this day, going back 3 months.

Let's give a short and simple example for you to understand this better; let's assume that the first day of a mother's last menstrual period is November 21, 2014. When 7 days are added to November 21, we arrive at November 28, 2014. When we go back 3 months from November, we arrive at August. When we add one year to 2014, we arrive at the estimated date of birth of the baby: August 28, 2015

  • November 21 + 7 = November 28

  • 11th month (November) – 3 = 8th month (August)

  • 2014 + 1 year = 2015

  • RESULT: 28.8.2015

However, if a routine period is not seen or if the expectant mother's ovulation date changes during that month, it may cause the pregnancy week to differ from the baby's actual birth date, i.e., the pregnancy week to be calculated incorrectly. In this case, the ultrasound measurements to be performed in the first 3 months are examined and taken into account. The last menstrual date and the estimated birth date are determined again and follow-ups are carried out as a result of these dates.
