How Long Should the Interval Between Two IVF Trials Be?

The most important factor affecting the success rates of IVF treatment is the woman's age. If the woman is 35 or older, the chance of success in IVF treatment decreases compared to those in their 20s. However, despite this, there may be a chance of pregnancy depending on the status of their ovarian reserves. However, when a woman reaches the age of 45, the chance of success in IVF treatment decreases considerably. In various cases, the chance of success drops to 5% at the age of 40 and above.

However, in general, the success rate of IVF treatment is 60%. There are many factors other than age that affect success in IVF treatment. The quality, number and morphological characteristics of the prospective father's sperm, the quality of the woman's egg cells, whether the uterus is suitable for pregnancy, the preferred center and the methods used can affect success rates.

How do unsuccessful IVF attempts affect subsequent attempts?

The chance of success in IVF treatment is not 100%. Success is usually achieved in the first three attempts. However, failure may occur in various cases and pregnancy may not be achieved in three consecutive attempts. Such cases are called recurrent IVF failures. In this case, there is no effective increase in succession for the 4th treatment.

However, failures experienced after the first attempt can serve as a guide for the second attempt. In this way, it can be determined where the mistake was made and the treatment can be more successful in the second attempt.

How many IVF attempts can a couple have at most?

The number of IVF attempts a couple makes depends on their financial and spiritual strength. Success is usually achieved in the first three attempts. However, there are couples who can achieve pregnancy in their 6th attempt. This is completely related to factors such as the woman's age, infertility problem, and treatment methods. The chance of success in treatment will be reported to the couple by the IVF specialist.

There is no legal limit on the number of attempts. Couples can try as many times as their psychological and economic strength allows. However, if the chance of pregnancy is low after a certain point, it can be said that no more attempts should be made so that the woman's psychology is not damaged and worn out.

It should not be forgotten that after the 3rd attempt, the success rate will decrease. For this reason, the costs of the examinations will also increase. Experts do not give a specific number on this subject. However, they do not recommend after six attempts due to these factors.

Should IVF attempts be repeated after unsuccessful attempts?

Failure in the first IVF attempt does not mean that other attempts will fail. The reason for the failure should be investigated, the factor causing the failure should be determined, the methods used and the drug doses should be changed, methods such as genetic diagnosis and ERA testing should be used. Then, IVF treatment can be started again. In this case, there is a chance of pregnancy.

How long should the interval be between two IVF attempts?

If IVF treatment has failed, one cycle will be enough for a new attempt. However, in various cases, expectant mothers may need a longer period to recover psychologically and physiologically. In this case, if the expectant mother is under 35 years old and has good ovarian reserves, she can wait longer. However, if the expectant mother is over 35 years old, it is very important to start a new treatment as soon as possible. The interval that needs to be given in IVF or microinjection (ICSI) methods is the same.

However, if there is a cyst or OHSS development in the ovaries during IVF treatment, a new IVF treatment should not be started until these problems are treated. In particular, the drugs used to stimulate the ovaries in IVF treatment can cause overstimulation in the mother-to-be. For this reason, cyst formation may occur. These cysts can be treated in a short time. Treatment should be started after the treatment is provided. Otherwise, the ovaries may grow even more.

Patients who want to take a longer break:

Patients who are younger than 35 may want to take a longer break due to financial or psychological reasons. If these patients have good ovarian reserves, they can take as long a break as they want. This break can be a few months or a few years. However, it should not be forgotten that ovarian reserves will decrease with age. Ovarian reserves decrease especially after the age of 35. If there is an early onset decrease in egg capacity, it is not necessary to take too long a break.

Those who receive IVF treatment at an advanced age:

Women who are older, especially those over 35, should not take long breaks from IVF treatments. Each month lost in these patients can lead to serious losses in ovarian reserves. For this reason, treatment should be started again as soon as possible. For these patients, it is enough to have one period to start a new trial.

What should candidates who want to take a break of two or more months pay attention to?

It is natural for the mother-to-be to want to take a break from IVF treatment for various reasons. At this point, the thing to consider is whether there is any problem with the ovaries. If there is no problem with the ovaries, a break of two or more periods can be taken.

The time between two IVF cycles is limited for women aged 35 and over. Women aged 35 and over have worse ovarian reserves than those in their twenties. For this reason, loss of time can lead to failure in IVF treatment. For this reason, treatment should be started again as soon as possible. For these patients, it is enough to have one period to start a new trial.
