Dangerous Situations That May Be Encountered During Pregnancy

Dangerous situations that may be encountered during pregnancy cause expectant mothers to worry. . In order to prevent all these, expectant mothers should take precautions. Pregnancy is among the periods that require utmost importance for women. The most correct thing is to have a doctor's check-up from the moment of conception. When there is no risk in women, they should go for a check-up periodically every four weeks until the 28th week of pregnancy. After that, they should go for a check-up every two weeks until the 36th week, and check-ups should be done every week in the following weeks. The risk assessment of women during pregnancy is carried out in different ways in each trimester. During pregnancy , women should not neglect both their routine check-ups and see a doctor in case of an emergency. If the risk factors of expectant mothers are high, every symptom should be taken seriously and shared with the doctor.

What are the situations that require consulting a doctor during pregnancy, other than normal check-ups?

During the first trimester of pregnancy;

During the first examination in low- risk pregnancies, an ultrasound examination should be performed. Therefore, it would be more beneficial for expectant mothers to see a doctor in the early stages of pregnancy. The purpose of this examination is to determine whether there is an ectopic pregnancy. In addition, multiple pregnancies are also determined by this examination. The examinations and determinations to be made during this time will determine the course of the follow-ups to be made during the pregnancy. During the examination, the expectant mother's blood pressure is measured, her blood type is determined, a complete urine culture and a complete blood test are performed. Determination of toxoplasma and rubella antibodies is very important during this period. Since bleeding that may occur in the first 8 weeks of pregnancy may be a sign of an ectopic pregnancy, a doctor should be consulted urgently, even if the bleeding is slight. Before bleeding, a slight pain is usually observed in the area where the pelvic bone is. Bleeding that occurs during this period may also be due to miscarriage. This period is the period when the risk of miscarriage is highest during pregnancy. Therefore, doctor check-ups should not be neglected.

During the second trimester of pregnancy;

During this period, expectant mothers will undergo some tests during routine doctor visits. Risk factors such as Down syndrome are determined with the triple test to be performed between the 16th and 18th weeks. Pregnant women usually start to feel the baby's movements in the 5th month in their first pregnancy. As the number of pregnancies increases, this period is brought forward earlier. Feeling a difference in these movements is a situation that requires a visit to the doctor. During this period, a color ultrasound should be performed to examine the baby's internal organs and body structure. The status of blood flow between the mother and the baby should be checked. In normal pregnancies, this is done between the 22nd and 26th weeks, while in risky pregnancies, the time is adjusted according to the problem. If the expectant mother has a palpitation complaint, it should be determined whether this is due to anemia. In addition, expectant mothers should be checked by an internal medicine and cardiology specialist to determine whether this is due to heart disease. If there is swelling in the expectant mother's body, this should also be examined. Normally, changes in hormones cause fluid retention in the tissues. The difficulty in circulation due to the growth of the uterus causes swelling in the body, especially in the legs. Since these swellings can also occur due to pregnancy poisoning, a doctor should be consulted and the necessary tests should be performed. The expectant mother should be monitored for blood pressure by checking the protein loss in the urine test. While vaginal discharge is considered normal in women during this period, if the discharge darkens in color, has a yellow-green color or a cheesy appearance and a bad smell, it is an indication of an infection and should definitely be treated by a doctor. If these are not treated in time, the risk of premature water rupture and premature birth will occur as it will progress towards the uterus. Apart from these, there may be situations that require pregnant women to see a doctor urgently during this period. These symptoms are;

  • Bleeding from the vagina,

  • Hardening and pain in the abdominal area,

  • Water coming out of the vagina,

  • Increased blood pressure,

  • Severe headache,

  • Pain, swelling and redness in the legs,

  • Having feverish diseases,

  • Purulent vaginal discharge or frequent urge to urinate.

In the last trimester of pregnancy;

During this period, expectant mothers may experience mild and intermittent contractions. These contractions are considered normal. They are seen as preparatory contractions before birth. Such contractions occur frequently during the baby's movements. Although expectant mothers' visits to the doctor become more frequent during this period, in some cases it is necessary to see a doctor urgently. These situations are;

  • In case of contractions and pain in the abdominal area,

  • Passing feverish diseases,

  • If there is bleeding or water coming from the vagina,

  • Decrease in movements in the baby,

  • High blood pressure and headache occurring together,

  • Blurred vision,

  • If there is swelling in the body, especially if there is a weight gain of more than 1 kg per week, you should see a doctor immediately.

When the time comes to give birth;

When the pregnancy is normal, regular walks, slow and cautious swimming, cycling at home, and exercises under the supervision of a specialist will help the birth. Paying attention to the weight gained during pregnancy will help the pregnant women get through this period comfortably. If the labor pains do not start despite the 40th week of pregnancy being completed, the pregnant women should definitely see a doctor. These pregnant women should be monitored with NST every three days and ultrasound once a week. The baby's condition in the womb, the amount of water, and the state of breathing are tried to be determined during the follow-ups. If no problem is detected, the labor pains are expected to start for about 15 days. If the labor pains do not start by the 42nd week of pregnancy, a doctor's intervention will be required to start the labor.
