Causes of Hot Flashes During Menopause

Menopause is a natural and physiological period that every healthy woman will experience. During menopause, egg cells are not secreted from the ovaries. For this reason, the woman's ability to conceive ends. In addition, since the ovaries have completed their function during menopause, the estrogen hormone secreted from the ovaries begins to be secreted very little. This low secretion of the estrogen hormone also causes various symptoms to appear during menopause. The most common of these symptoms is hot flashes during menopause.

Hot flashes during menopause:

Hot flashes caused by menopause can occur differently in every woman. The factor that causes hot flashes is still unknown. However, it is known that they occur due to changes in the hypothalamus, which is the heat regulation center in the brain. The hypothalamus determines the increase in body temperature. At this stage, various changes occur in the body to reduce heat. The capillaries close to the skin expand. In this case, the face and neck begin to turn red. Sweating occurs and an attempt is made to reduce body temperature. This is accompanied by an increase in the pulse and palpitations. Hot flashes are commonly followed by chills and shivering. Some women only experience shivering.

Hot flashes, especially at night, can be so severe that they wake a woman up from her sleep. If the sweating is very severe, this condition is called night sweats.

Do hot flashes only occur during menopause?

Menopause is not the only cause of hot flashes. Hot flashes can also occur due to conditions such as thyroid, infection or cancer.

How is hot flashes treated?

Hot flashes can be relieved with hormone replacement therapy for menopause. However, there are some precautions that should be tried before hormone therapy at this stage. These include:

  • Lifestyle changes:

Studies have shown that lifestyle changes can help relieve hot flashes. Avoiding stimulants that trigger hot flashes (such as hot drinks, spicy foods, alcohol, and smoking) can help relieve hot flashes.

  • Avoiding stress:

Reducing stress and exercising regularly are also factors that can help relieve hot flashes. Methods such as yoga and meditation are particularly beneficial. Breathing techniques and especially acupuncture methods can help relieve hot flashes.
