Baby's Upright Position in the Womb

1) The baby is in the reverse position in the womb

Sometimes, not everything can go as planned during birth. Not every birth ends successfully, and it is possible to encounter unwanted situations. One of these unwanted situations is the baby being upside down in the birth canal. In other words, the baby's head is up and its feet are down in the birth canal. Such situations are encountered in approximately 3% of pregnancies.

2) In which cases is the baby's breech position in the womb observed?

There are many factors that cause this situation. However, in premature babies and twin pregnancies, this situation is more common than average. On the other hand, there is another position called the reverse position. In this position, the baby's head is still up, legs are pulled up and towards the abdomen, and the baby is sitting cross-legged.

3) What are the negative effects of the baby being in breech position in the womb?

A baby being in the breech position poses a danger to both the mother and the baby. The possibility of the baby's umbilical cord prolapse increases when the baby is in the breech position. At the same time, when the baby is in the breech position and moving through the birth canal, the pressure applied to the umbilical cord causes a decrease in the oxygen flow from the placenta to the baby. In addition, in some cases, some damage may occur to the baby's spine. If these factors are present, the possibility of a cesarean section also increases.

4) What should be done against the risk of the baby being in a breech position?

What the expectant mother needs to do here is to have birth checks done on time and regularly. During these checks, they can get information about the baby's position.

5) What needs to be done to correct this situation?

Babies generally assume their birth position between 34 and 36 months. If the baby is still in a breech position at the 36th week, then some methods are used to turn the baby. These methods are butt lift and voice methods. Even if everything goes well, that is, the baby is in a proper position until the moment of birth, in some cases it is possible for them to shift into a breech position during birth. Of course, these situations are not very common.

Before applying the butt lift method, there should be no situation that would prevent you from applying this method.

For this, first the mother should lie on her back. You bend your knees and place your feet on the floor. Then lift your pelvis and place supportive cushions under your waist. When you lift your pelvis, the height of your hips should be approximately 30 cm to 40 cm higher than your head.

In the sound method, the logic works as follows; Babies in the womb are more sensitive to sounds, especially familiar sounds, and they react at that moment. When the baby is more active, placing a musical instrument near your belly and having the baby listen to it or your partner putting your head on your lap and talking to your baby will cause movement in the baby. The baby, who is in the opposite direction, will try to turn his head towards the direction the sound is coming from. Doing this at certain intervals can yield positive results. In fact, there are mothers and fathers who help the baby get into the right position with this method.
