Antibiotic Use During Pregnancy

1) Are antibiotics used during pregnancy?

Antibiotics may be required during pregnancy for some reasons. The most common reasons are urinary tract infections,

  • respiratory tract infections,

  • dental treatments,

  • sinusitis,

  • abscess,

  • Causes such as diarrhea are seen.

2) How should antibiotics be used during pregnancy?

Being pregnant does not necessarily prevent the use of antibiotics. When conditions that require antibiotics occur during pregnancy, antibiotics that are harmless or least harmful to the mother and baby are preferred for treatment. In this case, the specialist who will prescribe the antibiotic to the expectant mother and the gynecologist who monitors the patient should decide on the most appropriate drug together. While the use of some antibiotics during pregnancy poses a risk to the baby's health, some antibiotics do not pose any danger. However, some antibiotics have a certain level of risk of being harmful. However, if not using the antibiotic given to the expectant mother and not treating the disease will pose greater risks, then the use of antibiotics in this group is preferred. These may vary depending on the pregnancy category of the antibiotic.

Never use antibiotics or any other medication during pregnancy without consulting a doctor, even if it is written that it is not harmful to the baby.

Each person's body and current pregnancy are different. A drug that does not cause harm in one pregnancy may pose a risk in another pregnancy.

For this reason, as we have just mentioned, you should never use any medication without consulting your doctor.
